Dezeen is truly international, and this is a bucket list territory for KLD. We could not be more honoured with this tribute to our work. Commenting on the news, Founder and Creative Director Róisín Lafferty said:

” Dezeen showcases the best of design across the world and to be longlisted amongst such incredible design talents and creatives is so exciting for me and team KLD.”

To mark this wonderful news, we thought we would share a little about KLD with you.

Who we are

KLD is an award-winning Design House from Dublin. Founded in 2010 by designer Róisín Lafferty, KLD quickly made its mark as a respected Interior Architecture and Design agency in Ireland and Europe. Throughout its lifespan KLD has won numerous awards, however 2018 was an exceptional year. Róisín Lafferty won Image Interiors & Living Interior Designer of the year award, the design for Pot Bellied Pig café won at the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards, and the design for The Vaults Parlour won the Fit Out Project of the Year – Retail. In 2019 Róisín was announced as the new President of the Institute of Designers in Ireland.

How we work
KLD think differently about design. Our designs take people on a journey, delivering fun and unexpected experiences. With a holistic approach, we study the way in which people live and work to create tactile and meaningful design, putting human behaviour at the centre of every project. We are imaginative, creative and experimental. Through our work we create spaces with feeling, meaning and character. Our work begins with a thorough understanding of the people we collaborate with. We question, we listen, we observe. Equipped with the consideration of how human life will interact with the space we develop design details that will enhance both the aesthetics and the experience.

We are Experimental
AT KLD we like to push ourselves, boundaries and the limits of what is perceived possible. It has served us well. Being experimental requires an open mind, patience and thick skin. Added to this is a commitment to excellence, a willingness to succeed, resilience and a penchant to take the odd risk. We want to deliver the best for our clients, and we cannot do this alone.

Our standards
We are award-winning for good reason. The devil is in the detail and we aim for perfection. It is the least a client expects. We want everything to be the best, and there is no reason why it shouldn’t be. This has the wonderful benefit of encouraging and facilitating our partners and collaborators in their best work also.

Working with KLD
We are fun and easy-going people. Collectively, we have a great sense of humour, are open minded and love people. This translates into how we work. We enjoy a work environment where people are free to be themselves and get on with their job. Due to our own expectations and the commitment we have made to our clients, we expect the highest standard of work and finish. We are unapologetic when it comes to delivering the best. When you partner with KLD, you work with the best; a creative, diverse and experimental design team with a passion for delivering beautiful and functional spaces. We are supportive, collaborative, fair, reasonable and rational. We value design and we expect the same in return. We firmly believe our winning formula is one that brings out the best in all involved.

The Vaults RBDA Shortlist

We got the wonderful news last week that our beautiful whimsical design for The Vaults Parlour was shortlisted for not one but two Restaurant and Bar Design Awards.

The Restaurant and Bar Design awards take place every year in London. Last year our beloved Pot Bellied Pig design won best café at the awards.

This year the Vaults Parlour is nominated in the Heritage category and In Another Space category. The Vaults Live is an innovative and theatrical large-scale tourist attraction located in the heart of Dublin City, offering a unique and exhilarating tour and experience by taking the visitor on a journey throughout the most scandalous and exciting tales of Irish history in a stunningly renovated original four-storey Victorian building. The experience includes stunning 360° sets, state of the art lighting, lavish costumes and special effects.

KLD were appointed to take a creative and inventive approach when designing both the café and retail spaces, continuing the overall immersive theatrical experience whilst delivering a fully considered and highly operational F&B and retail aspect to the business.

Located in the Victorian vaults themselves, our designated area for cafe and retail was a combination of the original building and a much newer contemporary extension design. Here is a look at the two arches which once featured at the front of the building but are now indoors and a focal point of the room, framing the view in both directions.

This is how the arches look now, resplendent and framing the retail area beautifully.  The chequered floor, a nod to Alice in Wonderland, exudes the dreamy imagination filled curiosity of the design, rich with exquisite detail.  Many of the items you see in the below photo came from the Vintage Hub.

We love how to old works with the new, contrasting, complementing and framing. Our design for the Vaults is already a winner having won Best Fit Out — Retail at the 2018 Fit Out Awards.

Every aspect of this fit out was bespoke, custom designed and made to suit. The budget was tight so collaboration and collaborative creative thinking from both the design and build team was imperative to achieve the high-end result.

Fleetwood Stand at House 2019

A Fleetwood Feast of Colour at House 2019

Well that was a blast. We are still in recovery from House 2019, it was a fantastic weekend and an incredible effort by all to bring the Fleetwood Paints stand to life. This year we had four room sets as opposed to last year’s two, doubling the size, doubling the effort and doubling the colour.

The colours were hand-picked by KLD Creative Director and Fleetwood Ambassador,  Róisín Lafferty, and offer just a small sample of what Fleetwood has to offer.

Thanks to Moore O’Gorman Joinery who once again made the beautiful Fleetwood stand and to Brendan for the amazing paint job.

Here is a little bit about the colours used for each room set.

ROTHKO RED
Inspired by the depth and lustrous reds in artist Rothko’s evocative artworks, this strong tone creates a sense of drama and passion. Soften and layer with tones of dusty pink for a warm + intimate environment.

BOFIN FERN
Drawn from the beautiful natural landscape of InishBofin, Bofin fern is a soft and inviting green that summons feelings of freshness, outdoors and works beautifully with dusty grey green tones.

WYNWOOD
Inspired by Miami’s Wynwood Walls, this versatile hue is a KLD favourite. Combining navy and grey, this makes for a cocooning colour when used on walls and ceilings. It provides a warm and cozy environment to curl up in.

SIDE CAR
Inspired by the infamous side car cocktail, this rich, jewel toned colour has a historic quality that adds sophistication to any room. Pair with pastel hues for a sense of fun or rich greys for a more elegant result.

Finally, we also want to thank Pieces.ie for helping us furnish the Fleetwood stand and to Woo Design for their  beautiful arm chairs for the Inspiration Stage.

Thanks also to Mullan Lighting for the beautiful chandeliers that added that extra touch of class to Fleetwood Stand.

Check out the rest of the photos of the Fleetwood Stand by photographer Al Higgins here.

Thanks to everyone who helped make House 2019 happen. It is always a huge team effort to both set up and break down and we appreciate the time, effort and commitment that went into making the stand outstanding.

Before and After Video: Iconic Offices South Point

Before and After Video: Iconic Offices South Point

South Point office design was a pivotal project with Iconic Offices, as their largest office fit out yet. The brief for this project was to push the boundaries of what a co-working space could be. In order to do this, the design drew influence from the hospitality industry, in particular the design of boutique hotels. The project was as such an opportunity to express strong creativity and create a multitude of environments within one building.

Head over to the Iconic Offices South Point page to find out more about the project.
